UNIT TITLE |
Interpret basic asphalt tests |
APPLICATION |
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to interpret approved national testing results used to study the characteristics of asphalt and ultimately select it for specific applications. The unit of competency is applied by technicians in a structural and civil engineering environment where material testing forms the basis of important decision making. Graduates will be able to interpret basic bitumen tests. No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication. |
PREREQUISITE UNIT |
|
ELEMENT Elements describe the essential outcomes. |
PERFORMANCE CRITERIA Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element. |
1. Summarise the components, structure, and applications of asphalt |
1.1. Summarise the components and types of asphalt 1.2. Compare features of pavements made from bitumen and from asphalt 1.3. Compare advantages, disadvantages and applications of open-graded asphalt and stone mastic asphalt (SMA) 1.4. Identify the national Standards that provide guidelines for asphalt use and testing |
2. Explain and specify asphalt testing procedures. |
2.1. Explain national testing methods applied to asphalt 2.2. Outline general maintenance requirements of equipment used to test asphalt. 2.3. Outline calibration and maintenance of a Beam Fatigue Apparatus (BFA). 2.4. Interpret a given test result that provides the resilient modulus 2.5. Select and justify tests for given scenarios concerning asphalt |
3. Prepare an asphalt test report based on given results covering material selection according to project specifications |
3.1. Identify the specific national standards applicable to a given asphalt test 3.2. Prepare a report following national standards to recommend asphalt selection based upon given project requirements, laboratory test results, and data |
FOUNDATION SKILLS Foundation skills essential to performance are explicit in the performance criteria of this unit of competency. |

To achieve competency in this unit a person must demonstrate knowledge of:
|
ASSESSMENT CONDITIONS |
Assessment conditions: All assessment must be completed in accordance with work health and safety standards. When assessments are conducted remotely, invigilation software must be used to ensure authenticity of work completed. Model answers or marking guides must be provided for all assessments to ensure reliability of assessment judgements when marking is undertaken by different assessors. The candidate must have access to all tools, equipment, materials and documentation required. Assessor Requirements: Assessors must satisfy the assessor requirements in the standards for registered training organisation (RTOs) current at the time of assessment. Assessors must also hold a tertiary qualification in engineering or related field. Assessors must have worked for at least 3 years in industry where they have applied the skills and knowledge covered in this unit of competency. The RTO must also ensure that trainers and assessors keep their industry knowledge up to date through ongoing professional development. The RTO must take appropriate steps, as an ongoing procedure, to verify information about trainer and assessor’s qualifications, vocational competencies and current industry skills |
