UNIT CODE |
DCMCMT601 |
UNIT TITLE |
Apply construction materials and testing fundamentals |
APPLICATION |
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to determine, at a basic level, the physical and mechanical properties of a variety of materials and tests used in construction engineering. |
ELEMENT Elements describe the essential outcomes. |
PERFORMANCE CRITERIA Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element. |
1. Identify concrete types, quality and tests used in construction |
1.1. Research and determine the national norms, standards, definitions related to pre-cast and pre-mixed concrete and testing. 1.2. Identify the effect of core constituents on concrete properties 1.3. Compare the properties of concrete in plastic, setting, and hardened state 1.4 Compare concrete tests in terms of associated equipment, applications (pre-cast and/or pre-mixed), and suitability for laboratory or on-site testing: |
2. Identify aggregate quality, classification and tests used in construction |
2.1. Compare aggregates using established norms and standards for use in concrete 2.2. Perform visual quality control on aggregates 2.3. Explain aggregate tests and equipment used 2.4. Interpret test results from a given sieve test sample and summarise the grading and applicability according to national standards |
3. Identify timber properties and outline tests used in construction |
3.1. Compare the main properties of timber to engineered wood 3.2. Identify the national norms and standards that govern timber use, testing, and equipment used 3.3. Outline the factors that affect the physical and mechanical properties of timber. 3.4. Interpret results from timber tests |
4. Identify types of blocks and bricks and outline tests used in construction |
4.1. Identify and justify applications for the types of bricks and blocks 4.2. Identify and elaborate on basic tests and equipment for bricks and blocks 4.3. Interpret the results of a compression test on a given type |
FOUNDATION SKILLS Foundation skills essential to performance are explicit in the performance criteria of this unit of competency |

Assessment requirements for DCMCMT601 Apply construction materials and testing fundamentals |
PERFORMANCE EVIDENCE |
To achieve competency in this unit a person must satisfy the requirements of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills included in the unit. The person must also:
Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once for each criterion. |
KNOWLEDGE EVIDENCE |
To achieve competency in this unit a person must demonstrate knowledge of:
|
ASSESSMENT CONDITIONS |
Assessment conditions: All assessment must be completed in accordance with work health and safety standards. When assessments are conducted remotely, invigilation software must be used to ensure authenticity of work completed. Model answers or marking guides must be provided for all assessments to ensure reliability of assessment judgements when marking is undertaken by different assessors. The candidate must have access to all tools, equipment, materials and documentation required. Assessor Requirements: Assessors must satisfy the assessor requirements in the standards for registered training organisation (RTOs) current at the time of assessment. Assessors must also hold a tertiary qualification in engineering or related field. Assessors must have worked for at least 3 years in industry where they have applied the skills and knowledge covered in this unit of competency. The RTO must also ensure that trainers and assessors keep their industry knowledge up to date through ongoing professional development. The RTO must take appropriate steps, as an ongoing procedure, to verify information about trainer and assessor’s qualifications, vocational competencies and current industry skills |
