Interpret in-situ quality tests for soils, concrete and asphalt

APPLICATION

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to sepcify in-situ quality assurance tests applicable to soil, fresh and hardened concrete, and asphalt, as per international and Australian Standards.

The unit of competency is applied by technicians in a structural and civil engineering environment for specifying soils, concrete and asphalt according to recognised standards.

Standards

1.1.      Outline the Standard method for sampling and preparation for soils at test sites

2.1.      Outline the Standard process to collect in-situ concrete test specimens

2.2.      Outline the Standard process of securing core extraction from hardened concrete at a site

2.3.      Justify the option of non-destructive testing (NDT) of concrete at a site.

2.4.      Summarize the types of NDT for concrete and their applications.

2.5.      Explain, and interpret sample results from, Standard concrete testing methodologies

3.    Explain in-situ tests performed for asphalt according to national Standards

3.1.      Outline the Standard method for sampling and preparation for asphalt at test sites

TITLE

Assessment requirements for DCMIST630 Interpret in-situ quality tests for soils, concrete and asphalt

PERFORMANCE EVIDENCE

To achieve competency in this unit a person must satisfy the requirements of the elements and performance criteria, foundation skills and range of conditions included in the unit.

The person must also:

• Explain tests in accordance with Australian Standard 1289 or international equivalent
• Outline the Standard method for sampling and preparation for soils at test sites as per method 1
• Explain, and interpret sample results from, at least four of the following soil test standard methodologies from AS 1289:
  • field density test using the sand replacement method as per 5.3.1 & 5.3.2.
  • the dry-field density test using the water replacement method as per 5.3.5.
  • the nuclear surface-moisture density gauge test to determine field density and field moisture as per 5.8.4.
  • the California Bearing Ratio (CBR) test for soil using the standard field-in-place method as per 6.1.3.
  • the in-situ vane shear test for soil as per 6.2.1.
  • the Standard Penetration Test (SPT) results for soil as per 6.3.1.
  • the friction-cone penetrometer test for penetration resistance of soil as per 6.5.1.
• Outline the Standard process (per Australian Standard 1012 and ACI 228.2R) to collect concrete test specimens
  as per methods 1 & 8 and securing cores from hardened concrete at a site as per Method 14
• Explain, and interpret sample results from, at least four of the following Standard concrete testing methodologies:
  • the Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity (UPV) test.
  • Schmidt’s rebound hammer test.
  • the nuclear gauge test for concrete density
  • a cut and pull out (CAPO) test for concrete strength determination.
  • the concrete penetration resistance test (Windsor probe).
  • the concrete maturity test results based on the temperature history during curing.
  • the in-situ concrete permeability test
  • the half-cell potentiometer test for determining the corrosion in concrete reinforcement.
• Explain, and interpret sample results from, at least four of the following Standard (Australian Standard 2891.14) asphalt testing methodologies:
  • the nuclear density gauge (NDG) test results for in-situ density and asphalt pavement moisture from AS 2891.14.
  • the asphalt pavement coring and asphalt sampling from site from AS 2891.1.
  • the asphalt field density test from AS 2891.14.
  • the lightweight deflectometer test for determining pavement deflection.
  • the dynamic cone penetrometer (DCP) test for determining penetration resistance of asphalt pavements.
  • the Clegg impact hammer test for determining the strength of asphalt pavements
  • the plate load test for determining the bearing capacity of asphalt pavements.
• Summarise the in-situ quality assurance tests applicable for soil, concrete and asphalt

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once for each criterion.

KNOWLEDGE EVIDENCE

To achieve competency in this unit a person must demonstrate knowledge of:

• Key features of in-situ testing, including:
  
  • Methodologies for in-situ sampling and testing of soils, concrete and asphalt according to standards
  • Interpretation of sample results for tests of soil, concrete and asphalt

ASSESSMENT CONDITIONS

Assessment conditions:

All assessment must be completed in accordance with work health and safety standards.

When assessments are conducted remotely, invigilation software must be used to ensure authenticity of work completed.

Model answers or marking guides must be provided for all assessments to ensure reliability of assessment judgements when marking is undertaken by different assessors.

The candidate must have access to all tools, equipment, materials and documentation required.

Assessor Requirements:

Assessors must satisfy the assessor requirements in the standards for registered training organisation (RTOs) current at the time of assessment.

Assessors must also hold a tertiary qualification in engineering or related field.

Assessors must have worked for at least 3 years in industry where they have applied the skills and knowledge covered in this unit of competency.

The RTO must also ensure that trainers and assessors keep their industry knowledge up to date through ongoing professional development.

The RTO must take appropriate steps, as an ongoing procedure, to verify information about trainer and assessor’s qualifications, vocational competencies and current industry skills
