APPLICATION

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to determine the requirements for pavement condition and plan maintenance.

The unit of competency is applied by technicians involved with pavement maintenance to assess the requirements, extend service life, and ensure that safety and performance criteria are met.

TITLE

Assessment requirements for DCMPCM631 Determine pavement condition and plan maintenance

PERFORMANCE EVIDENCE

To achieve competency in this unit a person must satisfy the requirements of the elements and performance criteria, foundation skills and range of conditions included in the unit.

The person must also:

• Explain applications for the following types of maintenance in at least two examples:
  • Routine maintenance
  • Preventative periodic maintenance
  • Rehabilitation
• Explain the application of at least three of the following measures for repair from given examples:
  • Pothole
    • Gravel patching
    • Asphalt patching
  • Edge repairs
  • Surface treatments
  • Shape correction
  • Pavement cleaning
• Identify the following different types of concrete pavements that are used nationally
  • Jointed Unreinforced Plain Concrete Pavement (PCP)
  • Jointed Reinforced Concrete Pavement (JRCP)
  • Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavement (CRCP)
• Identify and explain at least the following causes of concrete defects:
  • Development of a slippery surface
  • Subsidence
  • Differential settlement
  • Spalling or cracking
• Evaluate given examples to justify at least three of the following repair methods:
  • Permanent measures
    • Treatment of slippery surfaces or surfaces that are badly worn
    • Joint maintenance
    • Slab replacements
    • Spall repairs
  • Temporary measures
    • Spalling
• Distinguish between temporary and permanent repairs.
• Outline the features of two of the following different types of pavement drains:
  • Table drains
  • Batter drains
  • Catch drains and banks
• Identify the following types of shoulders and explain maintenance activities:
  • Concrete shoulders
  • Unsealed shoulders
  • Sealed shoulders

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once for each criterion.

KNOWLEDGE EVIDENCE

To achieve competency in this unit a person must demonstrate knowledge of:

• Key principles of pavement maintenance, including:
  • Knowledge of maintenance activities applied to pavements and their variation according to pavement type.
  • Concepts of maintenance and method classifications

ASSESSMENT CONDITIONS

Assessment conditions:

All assessment must be completed in accordance with work health and safety standards.

When assessments are conducted remotely, invigilation software must be used to ensure authenticity of work completed.

Model answers or marking guides must be provided for all assessments to ensure reliability of assessment judgements when marking is undertaken by different assessors.

The candidate must have access to all tools, equipment, materials and documentation required.

Assessor Requirements:

Assessors must satisfy the assessor requirements in the standards for registered training organisation (RTOs) current at the time of assessment.

Assessors must also hold a tertiary qualification in engineering or related field.

Assessors must have worked for at least 3 years in industry where they have applied the skills and knowledge covered in this unit of competency.

The RTO must also ensure that trainers and assessors keep their industry knowledge up to date through ongoing professional development.

The RTO must take appropriate steps, as an ongoing procedure, to verify information about trainer and assessor’s qualifications, vocational competencies and current industry skills
