UNIT TITLE |
Assess pavement technologies and design criteria |
APPLICATION |
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to assess appropriate technologies to pavement, considering pavement types, materials and other structural considerations. The unit of competency is applied by technicians in a structural and civil engineering environment for selection of pavement technologies according to workplace and national Standards. No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication. |
PREREQUISITE UNIT |
|
ELEMENT Elements describe the essential outcomes. |
PERFORMANCE CRITERIA Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element. |
1. Determine applications for pavement materials and types |
1.1. Identify pavement components and explain the function of each. 1.2. Compare characteristics of rigid pavements, flexible pavements with unbound granular materials, and flexible pavements with one or more bound layers. 1.3. Summarise functions and applications of types of materials used in pavement design 1.4. Explain the factors that affect material selection for pavements 1.5. Compare common pavement types according to application to lightly-trafficked or heavily-trafficked roads 1.6. Compare the characteristics and applications of materials used in pavement 1.7. Summarise basic impacts of moisture, density and stress on Poisson’s ratio 1.8. Outline factors that affect the fatigue life of cement materials and their influence on design 1.9. Outline the role of asphalt layer thickness in pavement design |
2. Summarise concepts and variables used in pavement design |
2.1. Outline performance objectives of pavements. 2.2. Explain input variables used in pavement design 2.3. Analyse the impact of pavement thickness selection, cost considerations, and performance criteria on final design. 2.4. Analyse distress modes with pavement, likely causes and impact on design 2.5. Analyse the impact of material selection on pavement design |
FOUNDATION SKILLS Foundation skills essential to performance are explicit in the performance criteria of this unit of competency. |

Assessment requirements for DCMPTE627 Assess pavement technologies and design criteria |
PERFORMANCE EVIDENCE |
To achieve competency in this unit a person must satisfy the requirements of the elements and performance criteria, foundation skills and range of conditions included in the unit. The person must also:
Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once for each criterion. |
KNOWLEDGE EVIDENCE |
To achieve competency in this unit a person must demonstrate knowledge of:
|
ASSESSMENT CONDITIONS |
Assessment conditions: All assessment must be completed in accordance with work health and safety standards. When assessments are conducted remotely, invigilation software must be used to ensure authenticity of work completed. Model answers or marking guides must be provided for all assessments to ensure reliability of assessment judgements when marking is undertaken by different assessors. The candidate must have access to all tools, equipment, materials and documentation required. Assessor Requirements: Assessors must satisfy the assessor requirements in the standards for registered training organisation (RTOs) current at the time of assessment. Assessors must also hold a tertiary qualification in engineering or related field. Assessors must have worked for at least 3 years in industry where they have applied the skills and knowledge covered in this unit of competency. The RTO must also ensure that trainers and assessors keep their industry knowledge up to date through ongoing professional development. The RTO must take appropriate steps, as an ongoing procedure, to verify information about trainer and assessor’s qualifications, vocational competencies and current industry skills |
