Module 2: Engineering Computing

 

Nominal duration: 5 weeks (40 hours total time commitment).

 

This time commitment includes the preparation reading, attendance at each webinar (1 hour plus 15-30 minutes for discussion), and the time necessary to complete the assignments and further study.

 

 

MODULE PURPOSE

 

 

This module provides an introduction to the basic operation of several Engineering software packages used for applied mathematics as well as drafting and simulation purposes. This will serve as a foundation for the more detailed application of these packages later on in this course, as well as for the application of similar products in general Mechatronics or robotics-related development work.

To evaluate the achievement of the learning outcomes; written assignments, group projects and practical exercises are set.

Create drawings with Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) software

 

Assessment criteria

 

1.1.     Create a drawing of a simple mechanical component with      CAD software

 

 

 

 

Learning Outcome 2

Create programs by means of a visual programming language

 

Assessment criteria

2.1.     Create a simple LabVIEW program for reading and      displaying a process variable

 

 

Learning Outcome 3

 

Simulate electronic circuits

 

Assessment Criteria

3.1.     Simulate the following circuits by means of SPICE-based      simulation software:

      (a)  Simple analog circuit

      (b)  Simple digital (TTL) circuit

 

 

Learning Outcome 4

Create a Printed Circuit Board (PCB) layout

 

Assessment Criteria

4.1.     Create a single-sided PCB layout for a simple analog circuit

 

 

Learning Outcome 5

Perform elementary mathematical calculations with MATLAB

 

Assessment Criteria

5.1.     Perform simple vector algebra (addition and multiplication)      with MATLAB (or alternative)

 

 

Delivery Mode

A combination of asynchronous and synchronous e-learning delivery comprising a judicious mix of interactive online web conferencing, simulation (virtual labs) software, remote online labs, online videos, Power Points, notes, reading and study materials (in pdf, html and word format) accessed through the Moodle Learning Management System (LMS).
